Up until Year 12, I always felt that I was often behind-the-scenes in my activities, thus I wanted to try to step forwards and take on a leadership role. This opportunity appeared when a job description was sent out to all Year 12 and 13 students enrolled in the activity for the 2015-16 academic year.
I had first joined Local Link in Year 11 and really enjoyed teaching the kids English, hence I wanted to continue to participate in the activity. When I looked at the job description, I was still a bit intimidated by the responsibility of being Chair and therefore read the next one on the list: Secretary. The criteria asked for 1-2 people who would take on the role of - "taking registers, meeting minutes, and organizing internal matters of the activity (e.g. groupings)". I felt this was in my area as I was always an organised person who met deadlines and was fully prepared for the upcoming task. Additionally, I also wanted to have some experience with writing meeting minutes as this was something new to me. My application can be read below (there was a 100 word limit):

I did not fully expect that I would be offered the position as many other candidates, whom I knew, were also adequately qualified for the role of Secretary. It was to my surprise that I was given a co-secretary position by Mr Mason (typo in email, should be Sunny not Phoebe):

Ever since, I have worked hard with Sunny in organising groupings. It was a little tedious at first; inputting names into a Google spreadsheet, receiving emails from people who wanted to un-enroll themselves from Local Link, sending out emails to organise meetings, and making registers to check groups off when boarding a bus to a teaching session. However, these became easier to handle as we shared the workload and had committee meetings frequently to discuss the logistics of the Local Link activity. An email from Mr Mason acknowleding our 'fastidious organisation' was also very rewarding and pride-instilling, and made me want to continue working on improving myself as co-secretary:

So far it's been a helpful experience as Co-Secretary; I have learned how to communicate and manage students/events more effectively, and also had room to improve time and self-management when having to schedule time organise name lists and work on session plans with Resources Link. I do hope to continue improving and learning new skills in this position over the year!
